The band's studio output from 1968 through 1971 was rather aimless it could be argued that the cover art of the cow on Atom Heart Mother (1970) is more memorable than the music. However important The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn was for psychedelia, it was only a starting creative point, especially for Roger Waters, who took up the songwriting duties. Unfortunately, Barrett's hallucinogenic drug use so impaired his mind as to render him useless during the band's first tour of America in 1967, due to which the rest of the band engaged guitarist David Gilmour and then dismissed Barrett. But Barrett showed a whimsical, peppy song style for the band's early commercial singles "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play," and their debut LP, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), now regarded as a key album of the psychedelic era. Had Pink Floyd itself stuck to playing blues covers, it may have stayed as unknown as their namesakes. Their early leader Syd Barrett derived the name after the obscure African American musicians Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, both rediscovered by white fans of the blues in the 1960s. In contrast, the band's personal history was tortured.
